Family Counseling
I love to watch families emerge out of patterns that are entrenched within a system that are not serving them well. As a family counselor, I utilize a systems approach, which focuses on interactions between people in a family and between the family and its context. In my work with families we often explore boundaries, communication patterns, family rules and rituals as well as parental family of origin influences.
Some of the challenges/issues families seek treatment for include:
-
Attachment
-
Adoption
-
Infertility/Woman's Issues
-
Changes in Family Structure
-
Financial difficulties
-
Loss of Job/Adjusting to Retirement
-
Marital stress
-
Divorce
-
Family of origin issues
-
Family conflict
-
Family Rifts/Cutoffs
-
Parenting
Couples Counseling

As daunting as this task may seem, if you are dedicated, open minded and can stay the course you will find this to be one of the most rewarding and biggest emotional investments you will make.
Issues that bring Couples into Counseling may Include:

-
Retirement and its impact on the couple system
-
Addiction and its impact on the couple
-
Past Traumas
-
Extended Family Stressors
-
Sexual Dysfunction
-
Parenting
-

Individual
Counseling
Individual counseling is a process through which clients work one-on-one in a safe, caring, and confidential environment. We will work to explore feelings, beliefs, and behaviors, work through challenging or influential memories and identify aspects of your life that you would like to change. Individual counseling is counseling focused on the individual's immediate or near future concerns. Individual counseling may encompass career counseling and planning, grief after a loved one dies or dealing with problems at a job before they become big. Individual counseling is a one-on-one discussion where we will build an alliance that enables trust and personal growth.

My goal is that with every session the client leaves with new information to help them feel closer to their goals. I am action-oriented therapist in that I really want to get things moving for you. I am here to listen but then we must get a plan in place to create change- not more of the same. Most of the time we can get a lot accomplished in (3-6 sessions) unless there is other chronic or more complex concerns that require long term commitment before improvement is realized.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)Â
This internationally recognized treatment for trauma uses bilateral stimulation, typically eye movements to decrease stress and negative beliefs surrounding past traumatic experiences. EMDR is different from traditional therapies in that it does not require talking in detail about what occurred but rather focuses on changing the emotions thoughts or behaviors resulting from the distress. Sessions typically last from 60-90 minutes and often only a few sessions are necessary.
There is almost always some form of trauma we have experienced in our lives and EMDR is designed in such a way that its benefits can show overwhelming success for any type of trauma- both big and small.
Virtual Counseling
I provide tele-health counseling through the Doxy.me platform. This is a convenient and confidential option for all those with demanding lives. Students and professionals find this option most optimal when getting to an in-person appointment seems impossible. Appointments are done using a HIPPA compliant video and phone service for confidentiality, with a virtual waiting room for you to check into at your appointment time. I love being able to continue to see those that have moved out of the area, have moved onto the college setting or those that would never be able to connect with me due to proximity. Couples often find this to work better when there are two schedules to coordinate. Some clients like to do a combination of both virtual and in-person work as their schedule allows.
